High school, a place where students spend four years of their life to prepare for their college education or in other instances, the real world. Those last four years are different for students. Some get involved in sports, clubs, band, chorus, and other extracurricular activities, while others strive to be involved in more than one thing. They could also have a job or jobs outside of school. It is different for each student. The thing is that even if there are so many involvements in high school it is always a good idea to start taking college classes while having the opportunity. The more college classes taken, the better.
At Clarke, there is quite a decent amount of college classes offered. There are some at the local SWCC center as well as AP classes online. These classes are offered to those who would like to challenge themselves. However, these classes could become time consuming. It is a good idea to be able to set a schedule that works well with each person. The classes that you want to take are up to you, aside from the required classes that are needed to graduate. It is advised that students take classes that they will be able to give the best of their ability without stressing from other things they want to get done throughout high school.
Adding these classes to a high school schedule requires improving on time management skills. When the question, “ What sacrifices did you make when you started taking college classes?,” was asked to Briceida Sandoval, a senior student at Clarke, she responded, “Time, I started to spend more time on homework then spending time with my family. As well as needing to change my schedule to agree with my college classes instead of the other way around.” As Sandoval has taken five college classes from her junior to her senior year. She has had experience with juggling college classes, and work all at the same time. Another senior at Clarke, Alejandra Mayorga, was asked the same question. She replied “My time,” with a sigh. Mayorga has also taken five college classes.
College classes are offered in high school so that you are able to prepare yourself and advance in order to get as much as you possibly can earlier. As it is known, they are to be taken seriously, because if there is a failing grade at the end of the semester, apart from failing the class, you are required to pay fees. Then a retake of the class will be required when the time comes to enroll in college.
Every semester there is a new registration from given out to high school students who plan on taking college classes in high school. This form has already been given out for the upcoming spring classes. Make sure to talk to the school counselor, Mrs. Scott, in case you are interested in taking a college class, which will always be to your benefit. The due date for this form is on November 15. College classes are not classes to fear, it is all about getting an organized schedule to complete assignments and study. Just don’t forget to enjoy the best of your high school years.
