East Coast Cyclone Bomb Strikes
Lately in the East Coast the weather has been very bad. The East Coast was hit with a winter cyclone that came with snow. They call it a bomb cyclone. Bomb cyclones often occur in North America when cold air and warm air meet over the Atlantic Ocean. The storm made the United States colder in different parts. Southern states like Atlanta were at temperatures of 3 degrees. 1400 flights were cancelled due to the record breaking snowfall and rain (Yan, 2018). At least 16 people have died and authorities ask people to stay inside and don't drive. Throughout 5 states more than 13,000 people are without power and efforts are being made to restore it.
What makes a cyclone a bomb?
When the pressure drops the air moves. The faster it drops the faster the air moves in. That’s when a storm begins. A bomb cyclone becomes more powerful as a result of the air pressure plummeting. In Revere, Massachusetts floodwaters that have been frozen trapped cars in thick ice. A few homeowners in Hull, Massachusetts, were forced to leave their homes due to the large amounts of water and ice flowing down the streets (Paton, 2018).
Adriana Benitez’s (junior) home state was originally New Jersey, but she recently moved here last semester. For Christmas vacation, she went back to New Jersey to see all of her old friends. Unfortunately for her she went when a bomb cyclone hit the East Coast. She says that it wasn’t as cold as it was here. She said that it snows more here in iowa than it did there. She said that she still did whatever she wanted and the snow didn’t slow her down at all. While she was there she did see a car hit a street sign. Unfortunately the weather did cause her plane to be canceled which was later rescheduled.
